Michelle Yeoh has a lot to say about “Wicked: For Good” being shut out of this year’s Academy Awards.

Speaking to Variety in an interview published Thursday, Yeoh admitted she was still “in shock” after learning that the second half of the film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical had failed to garner a single Oscar nomination.

“I’m not surprised. I am in shock! I really am,” she told the outlet. “I think sometimes the problem is that people think, ‘Oh, you already got so much with the first one, let other people have a chance.’ But then it feels like, ‘No, come on!’ It’s such a beautiful, well-made movie.”

Yeoh, a 2023 Oscar winner for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” starred in “Wicked” and “Wicked: For Good” as Madame Morrible, a mentor turned antagonist to Oz’s rival witches, Glinda (Ariana Grande), and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo).

“Wicked” was released to critical acclaim in 2024 and became a holiday season blockbuster. The film picked up 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Erivo and Best Supporting Actress for Grande.

“Wicked” won for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, prompting many to assume the Academy would honor its stars for the second film. When “Wicked: For Good” hit cinemas last fall, however, reviews were mixed, with some critics pointing out that the film hadn’t overcome the preexisting flaws of the stage version’s Act 2.

Still, some fans have expressed dismay at the absence of “Wicked: For Good” among this year’s Oscar contenders. Grande, in particular, had been widely predicted to secure a nomination, given that her Glinda is the focus of the second film.

Though Yeoh didn’t single out any of the nominated movies by name, she told Variety, “If you compare it [with contenders this year], it should be there.”

“It’s not the replica of the first one,” she said. “It’s more elaborate and there are many more new destinations in ‘Wicked: For Good.’ So I was truly, truly very disappointed.”

Of course, Yeoh isn’t hurting for accolades these days. On Thursday, she received the Golden Bear Award for career achievement at the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany. Next week, she’ll be presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
