“Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver on Sunday suggested what Americans should do if they oppose President Donald Trump’s policy of mass deportations, noting the controversial crackdown is “built on existing laws.” During a deep dive on the Department of Homeland Security and its wide-ranging powers, Oliver argued that “if America doesn’t like what that policy looks like now that they’ve seen what it really means, then it needs to fucking do something about it.” He continued: “To the extent that we are all horrified by day laborers and grandfathers and little kids in bunny hats being terrorized by men in masks, then we need to elect people who will commit to writing laws that reflect that.” Oliver also took aim at Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and others aligned with the administration, such as White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, who is the architect of Trump’s anti-immigration agenda. “It does say something that to the extent that anyone over the last few months has been protecting our homeland and keeping it secure,” Oliver said, “it has not been Kristi Noem in her wide array of fun outfits or whichever 20-year-old dipshit has been pumping out Nazi-flavored content on Twitter.” Instead, he added, it has been “ordinary people on the streets of Minneapolis blowing whistles, delivering food to friends who are afraid to leave their houses and marching in the cold even though they’ve got goddamn work in the morning.” Quoting who he called a “gloriously frozen Midwestern man” whose interview criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement aired earlier in the segment, Oliver said: “They believe we are all human beings here and that this is fucking wrong.” Watch here: By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
