You want to cry, laugh, or swoon? We've got you covered! Post approved and edited by BuzzFeed Community Team Set in 17th-century Amsterdam, this film offers a beautiful and heartbreaking look at women's lives and the sacrifices they make, doing so much better than Emerald Fennell’s attempt. The romantic relationships are as perfectly enticing as they are doomed. Though this isn’t adapted directly from a novel, the film takes inspiration from The Awakening by Chopin and the Brontë sisters’ works, which is why it’s on this list. The plot is amazing, sapphic, and unique for films in this style. And it’s originally French, à la française! This historical fiction film has the almost essential quality of featuring Keira Knightley, which is why it ranks third. The film’s style is unique, with scene changes portrayed as actual stage-set transitions, perhaps highlighting the performative nature of love in 1870s Russia. If you’re looking to put more of the psychological in psychological romance, this movie should do it. It’s what Fennell’s movie should have had, with more book accuracy and a weird plot twist. This is the obvious winner for film adaptations. It stays true to the book, is beautifully shot, and has the perfect amount of yearning, which brings this film to the top of the list. On top of that, the music is good! Want to get your very own quizzes and posts featured on BuzzFeed’s homepage and app?
