Stephen Colbert Torches Hakeem Jeffries For Not-So-Bold SOTU Strategy

“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert called out House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) for advice he gave members of his caucus on how to handle President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday. Dozens of Democratic lawmakers skipped the address entirely in protest of the president and his agenda. But as Colbert noted, Jeffries told those who did attend not to make a scene during Trump’s speech. “An approach he dubbed silent defiance,” Colbert said. “Which I believe is a bold rebrand of doing jack squat. As Martin Luther King once said, ‘Shhh.’” But not everyone got the message ― or, if they did, they didn’t abide. Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar (Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.) shouted at Trump from their seats during the speech. “You should be ashamed,” Omar called. “You have killed Americans.” See more in Colbert’s Tuesday night monologue: By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
