Chloé Zhao Wears Dramatic Black Veil At The Oscars In Apparent 'Hamnet' Tribute

Chloé Zhao’s 2026 Oscars look may just inspire a few goth girls’ Halloween costumes: The “Hamnet” director ominously loomed on the award ceremony’s red carpet wearing a leathery black gown, a snake necklace and a long black veil. The dramatic look was very Morticia Addams coded, but suitable for the director of “Hamnet,” a film that centers on the family life of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife Anne “Agnes” Hathaway (Jessie Buckley) as they cope with the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe). Zhao is nominated for a Best Director Oscar for her work on the film. The look could also have doubled as a mourning outfit for the cancellation of the upcoming “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot, titled “Buffy: New Sunnydale,” which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and “The Lowdown” star Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Zhao directed. Gellar broke the news on Instagram Saturday that Hulu had dropped the project. “I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her,” Gellar said. “And how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.” By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
