Steven Spielberg And Timothée Chalamet Seem To Avoid Each Other On Oscars Red Carpet Days After Pointed Remarks

Things almost got supremely awkward for “Marty Supreme” star Timothée Chalamet and Steven Spielberg on the Oscars red carpet Sunday night. An Instagram post from ETalkCTV shows the two coming very close to each other ― just one person apart at one point ― but manage to avoid making direct contact. It’s possible neither noticed the other, but either way, it’s probably a good thing considering Spielberg made some pointed remarks about Chalamet’s recent controversial take about the popularity of ballet and opera in modern society. At a recent Variety & CNN town hall at the University of Texas at Austin, Chalamet told his interviewer and “Interstellar” co-star Matthew McConaughey that he doesn’t “want to be working in ballet or opera or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive,’ even though, like, no one cares about this anymore.” Chalamet’s comment ruffled feathers from all over the entertainment community, and he was criticized by opera singers, ballerinas like Misty Copeland as well as stage actors like Nathan Lane, who referred to Chalamet as “a schmuck.” Spielberg also threw out a shot during a panel last week at SXSW while discussing the importance of movie theaters. The director said that while he enjoys working with Netflix, the real film experience comes “when we can influence a community to congregate in a strange, dark space where all of us are strangers.” “At the end of a really good movie experience, we are all united with a whole bunch of feelings that we walk into the daylight with, or into the nighttime with,” he added. “And there’s nothing like that. It happens in movies, and in concerts. And it happens in ballet and opera, by the way.” As the audience cheered, Spielberg said that “we want that [experience] to be sustained. We want that to go forever.” HuffPost has reached out to both Spielberg and Chalamet for comment. But it appears neither of them made a point to talk to each other at Sunday’s Oscars, as the video below demonstrates.
