Longtime SLO County boutique closing after 20 years downtown. ‘Just so surreal’

A legacy boutique is shutting its doors for good in downtown Paso Robles, while its owners are looking toward their next chapter. Firefly Boutique at 839 12th St. had a paper announcement attached to its glass door Friday, citing the boutique’s retirement and the owners’ move toward “new projects” as its reason to close at the end of the month. “It’s just so surreal,” co-owner Emily Miller told The Tribune. “It’s bittersweet, which is the word that keeps coming back to me as I’m processing through this, because it’s a trip. There’s so much that we’re going to miss, but at the same time, I’m also really interested in what the next chapter holds.” Firefly Boutique first opened in 2006 with Emily Miller and her mother Laurel Miller working together as co-owners when they “took the leap” and brought more retail and art options to Paso Robles. “I just felt like our shopping really needed something more,” she said. “So we just decided to do it. We just kept changing and going over the years, and it’s just been a really cool adventure. Honestly, we had a great time together.” Firefly’s inventory includes vintage-inspired clothing, unique gifts, home decor, art by local artists and books. In its final month, the boutique has a 25% off discount on everything with credit card sales and a 40% discount on cash sales. For Emily Miller, one of the biggest things she’ll miss is the creative outlet the store offered her. “A big part of our vision is creativity and making sometimes-absurd window displays,” she said. “It’s been so fun. I’m really going to miss making the big displays, for sure.” Firefly Boutique is set to permanently close by the end of March, with Laurel Miller retiring and Emily Miller looking for her next step. “We’ve been talking about it for a little bit, but it was just between Laurel and I, so when we were ready to go, we just had to rip the Band-Aid off, which has been hard and sad,” Miller said. “We’ve met so many wonderful people over the years, so many good people, and we’re going to miss seeing everybody and being able to share our creativity with them.”
