'Spineless': House Republican Pelted With Boos, Rage At Chaotic Town Hall

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) faced a wave of boos and criticism from his constituents at a town hall event on Sunday as he attempted to defend his support for President Donald Trump’s unpopular Iran war. “You say that when you disagree with Trump, you will tell him so, but that’s not enough,” said a man who sparked “loud cheers” from the crowd, per the Journal News. “You must impeach. He’s a fraud, he’s corrupt, he’s an incompetent psychopath. The Republican Party and you are enabling him. You’re all cowards, and you’re spineless,” the man continued before he was kicked out of the auditorium at New York’s Mahopac High School. The comments arrived moments after Lawler — a centerpiece of sorts for hostile town halls since Trump’s return to office — argued in favor of the president dragging the U.S. into the war, declaring that America needs to “do everything we can to ensure” the Iranian regime doesn’t get a nuclear weapon. Video shared by The New York Times’ Robert Jimison shows a man shouting down the congressman as he’s escorted out of the event, though it’s unclear whether it’s the same man. As Lawler hopes to fend off Democratic challengers to retain his U.S. House seat in November, the Republican faced questions over why he and others in his party rejected an effort that would have directed Trump to end the war last month. “The fact is the president is well within his authority to conduct the strikes that have been conducted,” Lawler said as a wave of boos erupted in the audience, per The Washington Post. “If, at the end of these 90 days, the conflict is not done, then yes, Congress should take steps to authorize continuing force,” he continued, noting that it’d be “idiotic” to call on troops to leave the region at the moment. Lawler, who reportedly scolded the crowd for acting worse than “high school students” in the auditorium earlier in the event, was later accused of having “abdicated” his responsibility to his constituents in New York. “You have in fact endangered our young people, our service members of our country and killed civilians by not standing up to Trump on this unjustified war,” said Marion Walsh, a self-described military mother and daughter. The crowd appeared to be “almost evenly split” between Lawler’s critics and supporters, the Post reported. At least one backer suggested Lawler get more involved in the Iran negotiations, describing him as “a commonsense guy,” and others agreed with the congressman’s assessment that the critics were behaving worse than students in the auditorium.
