“Toy Story 5” Just Dropped And The Internet Is Having Two Completely Different Reactions

Nostalgia, and very divided opinions – here’s what people are actually saying about Toy Story 5. Toy Story 5 officially dropped today, with cinemas set to be filled with two types of people: families trying to keep toddlers quiet with overpriced popcorn, and nostalgic millennials preparing to emotionally fall apart over animated toys again. Tom Hanks has returned once again as the iconic cowboy Woody, and Tim Allen as the superhero action figure Buzz Lightyear. As for the storyline, think “welcome to parenting in the digital age, but make it Pixar.” The latest film delves into a tech takeover as eight-year-old Bonnie receives a Lilypad tablet to make new friends, and in doing so, starts neglecting her toys. That’s when beloved cowgirl Jessie comes in to help her make real-life friends. But while that premise alone is already hitting a nerve with parents everywhere, the reaction to the film has been… split, to say the least. Early critics have had very mixed takes, with one calling it “the worst in the series” and another suggesting the franchise is “played out”. But fans seem to be watching a different film entirely, flooding timelines with praise. making jessie the protagonist of toy story 5 was just beyond brilliant 😭 such a fresh perspective & how her history parallels the story being told here & the themes of growing up too quick or no longer being “of use” to your kid felt like a sledgehammer to my tear ducts dude 😭 pic.twitter.com/bNaYv5RZ2r TOY STORY 5 is wonderful. It’s a miracle that a fifth entry in a nostalgic franchise has such fresh material + is sincerely interested in reaching out to younger audiences. Jessie gets her moment in the sun, but the focus on the value of human connection resonates even more. pic.twitter.com/VGCfWs3MUK As someone who didn’t care for Toy Story 4, I absolutely adored Toy Story 5. So fulfilling. Great message, extremely funny, thoughtful, and inventive.Really wonderful movie and one that I will definitely watch again. pic.twitter.com/Z3b2oCiZ6v At this point, it’s basically critics vs people who grew up with Woody, Jessie, and Buzz and are emotionally not equipped to let go. If you’re already wondering when you can watch it without leaving your house and feeling things in public, Toy Story 5 is currently only in cinemas, but streaming questions are already rolling in. While Disney+ hasn’t confirmed a release date, reports suggest Disney typically waits around 100 days after theatrical release before dropping films on the platform. So if that pattern holds, you’re probably looking at around September. Until then, it’s cinema tears or nothing. BuzzFeed reached out to Disney for more details
