"I’m the Terminator of the Oscars, I’ll be back."

As the Deputy Editorial Director of Pop Culture at BuzzFeed, I oversee our celebrity and entertainment coverage.

The esteemed songwriter does have an honorary Oscar for "extraordinary lifetime achievement" that she received in 2022, but has yet to nab the "Best Original Song" award.

The song recently passed a whopping 1.5 BILLION plays on Spotify and is a bona fide smash hit by all metrics.

Lost to: "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life" from Dirty Dancing. Which of course!!! This is some bad timing luck because that's an all-timer.

Lost to: "You Must Love Me" from Evita. And "That Thing You Do" from That Thing You Do was also nominated that year.

Lost to: "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic. Ahem, speaking of bad timing luck. Not much else to say here except it sucks that Diane wrote an absolute Celine bop the year before only to be overshadowed by the ULTIMATE Celine bop.

Lost to: "When You Believe" from The Prince of Egypt. I gasped! I thought, surely "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" should've won until I saw what beat it. Whitney! Mariah! Sorry, Diane.

Lost to: "You'll Be In My Heart" from Tarzan. Okay LOL I'm so sorry Diane. The luck once again working against you because Phil Collins did not have to go so hard on the Tarzan soundtrack, but alas he did.

Lost to: "If I Didn't Have You" from Monsters Inc. A Randy Newman jam. I just had a full body cringe remembering my very unfortunate talent show rendition of "There You'll Be" but, dang, another iconic Diane Warren song that simply didn't get the Oscar.

Lost to: "Glory" from Selma. After a truly iconic run, there was a 13-year gap until her next nomination. But alas, it was the same year as John Legend and Common's powerful hit, "Glory."

Lost to: "Writing's on the Wall" from Spectre. The harrowing song lost out to Sam Smith's Bond tune.

Lost to: "Remember Me" from Coco, which absolutely makes me tear up whenever I hear it.

Lost to: "Shallow" from A Star Is Born. Like I said, welp.

Lost to: "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" from Rocketman. It just keeps GOING.

Lost to: "Fight for You" from Judas and the Black Messiah. Seriously, another year, another loss.

Lost to: "No Time to Die" from No Time to Die. Another Bond song loss, no less.

Lost to: "Naatu Naatu" from RRR. We're firmly in "Diane Warren songs I don't actually believe are real" territory.

Lost to: "What Was I Made For" by Billie Eilish and Finneas. Not only was it unfortunately the same year as Barbie but also Flamin' Hot is literally the Cheetos movie...

Lost to: "El Mal" from Emilia Pérez. Presented without commentary.

Lost to: "Golden" from Kpop Demon Hunters. And now we're back where we started.
